General Questions

General questions related to lace wigs

Will lace wigs or adhesives break my skin out?

Lace wigs are often coated with chemicals that may break your skin out. We suggest you perform a skin test before altering your lace wig since we do not accept altered or worn units back. If you have sensitive skin, we suggest you order Virgin lace wigs because they are free of chemicals. Adhesives and glues may also break out your skin.

What is a full lace wig?

Lace wigs are made of materials which resembles a mesh like-base or cap such as a pair of hosiery. The cap of the wig  is composed of swiss lace. The hair is handtied onto the cap in making the wig. This technique allows freeflowing hair that offers unlimited styling possibilites. The most popular are the sleek high ponytails sported by all the hottest celebs on red carpets everywhere! Lace wigs do require professional application where the edges of the lace is then either glued or taped to the outer perimeter of your head. When dry, the lace becomes invisible and blends with your own skin. The hair actually looks like it is growing out of your scalp - no matter where you part it!

What is the difference between a full lace wig and a lace front wig?

A full lace wig is constructed with lace throughout. The hairs are handtied throughout. The full lace units provides plenty of stling possibilites as you can part anywhere on the lace. High ponytails and even cornrow braids are possible. This unit will require the use of adhesive around the full perimeter of the unit.

Lace front wigs are manufactured with a thin lace that extends from ear to ear across the hairline. In the back, a lace front wigs are constructed similar to regular wigs with weaving wefts. A lace front wig will not have lace in the back and therefore can not be worn in a high ponytail with the nape showing.  A lace front unit will only require ahdesive on the front hairline.  TIP: Sew the back down for added security!

Why are lace wigs so popular?

What is a lace front wig?

Lace front wigs have lace in front and weaving wefts at the back of the cap. The lace in the front can still be applied to the skin on the hairline using glue or tape. The rear wefts can be sewn into braided hair. This still provides the natural hairline at the front and some limitation in the back. Our lace wigs come with adjustable straps at the nape unless otherwise specified.

Does the wig come with baby hair?

YES! At Platinum Wigs we include baby hair. A lace front unit will have baby hair across the front. A full lace unit will have baby hair around the perimeter on the full lace unit! You dont have to worry about those additional charges many suppliers add for baby hair! Get more for your money at Platinum Wigs!

What does hair density mean?

Hair density is the thickness of the wig. The higher the density of the hair, the thicker the wig will be. For example, 110% density is a natural looking wig. 130% is considered heavy density and 150% is considered super thick.  If you are looking for a realistic natural looking wig, follow the pattern of your own hair.

Do you charge extra for baby hair?

No. There is no extra charge for baby hair.

What is a widow's peak?

Applying and Removing Your Lace Wig

Questions related to applying and removing your lace wig

Is it better to use a professional to apply my lace wig?

The primary reason for purchasing a lace wig is to create a very natural looking hairline so that the wig doesn't appear to be a wig.  To achieve this look, we suggest you contact a professional to install your wig.  It's not a good look to purchase a nice looking lace wig that ends up looking wiggy because it was poorly installed.  Do yourself a favor and allow a professional to install your lace wig.

Can the lace wig be sewn down?

Yes. Many customers sew down their lace wigs for added security. TIP: Use a small C curve needle & becareful with the lace!

Are lace wigs difficult to apply?

Our lace wigs or hair extensions are not difficult to install.  However, if you're hestitant or nervous about installing your own, do not take the chance of possibly destroying it.  Call a professional.  There are many individuals in the industry who can install these products relatively inexpensive.  If you have a problem locating someone reputable in your area, we'll be glad to try and assist you.  We want you to look your absolute best wearing our wigs and hair extensions, and a professional installer and stylist can play a big role in obtaining that celebrity look.

Can you recommend a professional in my area?

Platinum Wigs is working to build a team of certified lace wig professional in various geographical areas. We are also building affiliations with many professional stylists worldwide. Send an email to info@platinumwigs.com to see if we can recommend certified professional in your area.

Do I have to wear a wig cap beneath the wig?

It is not mandatory to wear a wig cap underneath a lace wig. However some need the wig cap in order maintain their hair beneath the wig. If the hair if braided down, it is usually not necessary but some people prefer the wig cap. TIP: Try to use wig cap that complements your skin tone and wig color.

Who is a good candidate for a lace wig?

Any woman who desires a flawless hairline is a good candidate for the lace wigs! However, a person that has a hairline that comes far into the face or down the neck, must be willing to remove the surplus hair. This hair removal is to ensure proper application and appearance of a natural hairline.

Do I have to remove the wig each day?

No you do not have to remove your unit each day. The various adhesives have different hold strengths/time. We recommend getting your wig applied based on your lifestyle needs. You have the option of using an adhesive with a (1) day hold, (7) day hold, up to 6 weeks hold. For a short term hold up to 2 weeks we recommend Mity Tite Adhesive. For a stronger, long term hold, we recommend and offer Ultra Hold. TIP: For more details or to purchase either of these products visit our Accessories Page

Is it expensive to have lace wig applied by a professional?

No. The average application ranges from $50-100 just depending on the professional.

Can I wear a lace wig if my head is completely bald?

YES! You would be an excellent candidate for a lace wig. Lace wigs and toupees were originally created for people suffering from hair loss. Many of these patients were bold or practically bald! If there is not hair underneath, you will achieve the flattest, most natural looking hairline!  Some of our customers actually request to be shaved prior to application for that very reason.

Can I apply my own lace wig?

There is normally a short learning curve for perfecting your application. However, you do not need to have the skills of a licensed cosmetologist to be able to apply your lace wig. We will provide you with the tools needed to perfect your application. We will eventually include basic lace wig application instructions with each lace wig purchase. Of course, the best course of action is to seek out the services of a stylist who specializes in lace wig applications.

Can I wear a lace wig if I have a lot of hair?

Yes. You can wear a lace wig even if you have long hair. Simply make your hair as flat as possible. Some prefer cornrow braids, others choose to wrap their hair. The use of a wig cap can help keep your own hair secure underneath. TIP: The flatter the better!!

Yes. The hair is 100% human hair that and can withstand household styling tools such as curling irons and flat irons. You can wash, set, and style the wig as you would your own hair. But like your natural hair, the hair can get damaged with the misuse and overuse of products.

Can I perm my lace wig?

Yes, you can. However, you must remember to treat your new lace as you would your own hair. Harsh chemicals prove to be damaging to the hair as well as the lace. Use your discretion and always seek the advice of a professional.

Tips for Proper Care and Maintenance

Questions related to proper care and maintenance

Can I apply chemicals to my lace wig?

Yes, you can. However, you must remember to treat your new lace as you would your own hair. Harsh chemicals prove to be damaging to the hair as well as the lace. Use your discretion and always seek the advice of a professional.

How can I prevent my lace wig from shedding?

Reseal your Knots after EVERY WASH.

Avoid scratching your scalp through your unit as this will cause shedding.  Instead, pat your head with your head or remove your unit and treat your scalp with an anti-itch shampoo and conditioner and then moisturize your scalp with an oil or hair grease to prevent itching.

We advise to AVOID from putting productsComb your unit starting from the ends working up to the root, holding the hair above as you comb so that it won't pull on your knots.

Use a ventilated wig brush to comb your wig, not a bristle brush. directly in the hair that contain high levels of alcohol ie. Hair Sprays, Spritz, etc..  As these products can damage the hair and cause shedding or breakage.

You MUST clean all the glue residue off your wig when you remove it.  Letting glue or other adhesives build up on your lace will cause shedding.

Do not comb your wig when its wet.  Prior to washing your unit make sure you comb it out thoroughly and that its nice and smooth before you start to wash it.

Do not Blow Dry or Sit Under a Dryer with high heat. Instead you should let your unit air dry.  If you must blow dry, make sure it is on the cool setting.  Blow Dryer heat will damage/split the knots and cause shedding.

TIP: LACE WIG KNOT SEALER  & CURL DEFINING DETANGLING CONDITIONING SPRAY recommended and available under the accessories section of our website.

Can I part my wig as I wish?

On a full lace wig you can part the hair anywhere because it is handtied throughout. On a lace front wig, you can only part on the lace, which is normally located ear to ear at the front of the unit.

Can I shower or swim in my lace wig?

Once your lace wig is properly applied, water should not affect the glue. Most of the adhesives are water resistant. If you plan to engage in more water activities than normal, go with an extended hold adhesive. You can also sew it down for added security.

Can I wear my lace wig in a high ponytail?

Yes, the sleek high ponytail is one of the most popular styles of lace wig wearers. TIP: You must have a full lace unit in order to achieve this style. This style is not possible with lace front units.

How do I properly care for my lace wig after swimming?

After any activities involving excess water or sweat, you want to towel blot the lace immediately. Blow drying on cool air can expedite the drying process. For the hair, you want to use a detangling conditioning spray and big tooth comb to detangle from the end and working toward the root. Always remember not to use a bristle brush! Because the lace is vulnerable when wet be very careful. Air dry is the safest method.

How do I take care of my lace wig?

Every lace wig purchase will include basic care instructions. Product recommendation for maintenance will also be included with every lace wig purchase. TIP: Care and maintenance products are available in our Accessories section.

Absolutely! Depending on the hold life of the adhesive you may sleep in your wig for many nights.        TIP: We recommend the use of a satin bonnet at bedtime.

Can I blow dry my lace wig after washing?

We do not recommend blow drying your wig. Blow Drying can cause shedding because of high heat and the hair is weaker when wet.  After washing we suggest air dry or sit under dryer on low to medium heat.

How often should I wash my lace wig?

You can wash your wig as needed. We recommend the use of natural high quality products with emphasis on conditioning. Some people like to wash their unit while it is still applied on their heads. Others prefer to wash the unit after it has been completely removed.

How can I prevent my lace wig from tangling?

It is natural for human hair to tangle and shed somewhat. However, with proper care and maintenance you lace wig should be very manageable. We recommend the use of a big tooth comb and detangling conditioning spray or leave in conditioner to soften. When going to bed, the use of a satin bonnet will certainly help. If not merely put it in a ponytail during resting or idle time.

Hair Texture Questions

Questions related to hair texture of lace wigs

What is Yaki hair texture?

Yaki textures mimic the hair pattern of African American hair. PLATINUM WIGS carries Soft Yaki hair texture. This texture resembles that of permed or relaxed African American hair. It is not kinky and is very manageable.

What is Indian Remy hair?

Indian Remy (also spelled Remi) hair is a premium quality  human hair from India. This hair has many good characteristics.  The most apparent characteristic of Indian Remy (and other Remy) hair is the fact that the cuticles have been kept intact and flow in the same direction after removing from the donor.  This means that all the roots are at one end of the bundle of hair and all the tips are at the other end.  This helps prevent shedding and tangling and also mimics the natural growth pattern of hair.  Non-Remy hair tends to tangle and frizz easier and much sooner than Remy quality hair because the cuticles rub against each other.  Remy hair has an apparant luster than makes it more expensive, desirable, and natural looking than non-Remy hair. It usually has a wavy/curly natural texture but can be flat ironed or hot curled straight. When washed, this hair will return wavy/curly.  PLATINUM WIGS uses the the finest quality of Indian Remy hair in the production of our lace wigs.

Be care of purchasing human hair that is not 100% Remy.  This hair is often coated with chemicals such as silicone to temporarily appear similar to true Remy.  However, it's luster fades away quickly.

What is silky hair texture?

Silky textures mimic that of Causasian or Latino hair. Our closest texure to silky straight would be Natural Straight. This texture is has less shine than the silky straight. Our natural straight texture also has a hint of body!

What is Virgin Remy hair?

While most hairs have gone through some form of chemical processing to achieve the color or texture, virgin remy hair is unprocessed. Virgin Remy hair has never been colored, permed, straightened or chemically treated in any way.  It will come in its natural state, so it tends to be stronger and healthier than non-virgin hair.

What is the difference between yaki and silky?

The difference between yaki and silky textures lies in the hair pattern. Yaki textures mimic the hair pattern of African American hair. Silky textures mimic that of Causasian or Latino hair. We carry soft yaki hair texture. This texture resembles that of permed or relaxed African American hair. It is not kinky and is very manageable. Our closest texure to silky straight would be Natural Straight. This texture is has less shine than the silky straight. Our natural straight texture also has a hint of body!

Lace Wig Measurements

Questions related to lace wig measurements

Do I have to measure my head to order a lace wig?

It is  a good idea to measure you head if you have never worn a lace wig. Most stock wigs will come in small, medium or large. Medium is usually the most popular and is considered an average size 22.5 The most important measurement is the circumference (the distance around the head). Secondly measure the distance from forehead to nape. Next from ear to ear over the top of the head. Lastly measure the nape of the neck. You will then have all of the measurements needed for a custom lace wig order.

How is the length of your lace wigs measured?

At PLATINUM WIGS, we measure the length of the wig according to the hair strands used in the construction of the wig. EXAMPLE: If the hair is 18 inches, then the wig is 18 inches. We do not measure from crown to tip like many competitiors.

How do I apply my lace wig?

We will send you some instructions along with your lace wig purchase.

How do a properly measure my head?

Measuring you head is very important especially when customizing a wig. The most important measurement is the circumference (the distance around the head). Start at one ear and trace the hairline all the way around to the starting point. Secondly, measure the distance from center forehead to center nape. Next, from ear to ear over the top of the head. Lastly, measure the nape of the neck. Documents all of your measurements. You will then have all of the measurements needed for a custom lace wig order. TIP: Most wigs will come with mechanisims that will allow for some stretching or adjustments.

Lace Cap Questions

Questions related to lace caps

What are the difference between lace caps that stretch and those that do not?

Full lace with stretch is the typical cap construction for stock lace wigs. This fit provides the most comfortable fit if your measurements are slightly off or change due to variations in the preparation of your hair underneath (ex: wrapping your own hair vs. cornrowing). The stretch is normally located at the crown or rear of the wig. This stretch allows some sizing flexibility. Full lace throughout with no stretch lace – may have Swiss lace in the front and French lace crown to nape. This cap design works well only if your measurements are accurate. There are no stretch areas to forgive inaccurate measurements. Both cap designs can be parted and worn in any manner.

What is the difference between French lace and Swiss lace?

Swiss is the most delicate of the two. It is also made with a finer lighter lace. As a result, it provides the most natural looking hairline. French Lace is more durable and will hold up better to wear and tear. French lace is often recommended to first time or new lace wig wearers.

Do you have a lace color chart?

While we have not uploaded a color chart, we do have various samples throughout the site of the colors and textures we offer. We feel that an actual wig is a better reference than a color chart.

What are the different types of lace caps available?

PLATINUM WIGS offers 4 (four) types of lace caps. The lace front cap - which is constructed with 3 (three) inches of swiss lace at the front ear to ear. The rear of the cap is constructed like that of a regular wig with adjustable straps. We also carry our exclusive semi full lace cap. This cap has 3 (three) inches of lace at the front ear to ear and 1 (one) inch of lace at the nape. The middle is wefts sewn down on a stretch silk cap. You can select to add combs to either the lace front wigs or semi full lace wigs. Next, we carry full lace wigs. Our full lace wigs are hand tied throughout. The lace is all over with some stretch at the rear crown. Lastly, we offer full lace wig cap PLUS silk top. The silk top is a 4.5 x 4.5 section at the top of the hear between the temples going back. The rest of the wig is made of swiss lace. The full lace wigs offer the most styling versatility and flexibility.

What color lace will best complement my skin tone?

The lace used in our wigs comes in three colors. Lite Brown - Great for Caucasian and lite complexion. Medium Brown - Great for medium to dark brown complexions. Transparent - Great for any skin tone. TIP: Be sure to read product description for lace color.

How do you size lace caps?

There a six (6) steps in measuring for a lace wig.  The first and most important is the circumference. Using a measuring tape, document the circumference of the head all the way around. Secondly, document the distance from front to nape. Thirdly, document the distance from ear to ear across the forehead. Next, measure and document the distance from ear to ear - over the top. Then measure and document the distance from temple to temple around the back. Lastly, measure and document the nape of the neck.
