5 Steps to the Best Deep Condition Ever!

Posted by

Rinse & Wash

Prior to applying your deep conditioner, be sure to wash your hair. This may seem like it goes without saying, but many people simply rinse their hair before applying their conditioner. This may be a good idea for your regular weekly (or bi-weekly) co-wash but in order for your hair to truly soak up the benefits of a deep conditioning treatment, you should start with a clean scalp and clean hair.

Apply Yourself!

Something I never took into consideration until recently was how I applied my conditioner. Before, I balled my hair up on top of my head, squeezed the conditioner onto my hair and rubbed like crazy. This is a bad idea for several reasons. One, bending the hair unnaturally can lead to split ends. Second, the ends of your hair is where most of the damage is done therefore you need to apply conditioner directly to your ends. And lastly, you want all of your hair to benefit from your deep conditioning treatment so apply the conditioner with your fingers from root to tip.

Use the Right Product for You

Whether you’re going with a store bought treatment of using your kitchen to create your conditioner, find a treatment that is going to be effective for YOUR hair. I’ve used everything everyone has ever recommended to me, from drug store brands to salon quality products to homemade remedies from hair blogs and YouTube videos. Ultimately, I found that creating my own treatment left me with the shiny, soft and manageable hair I’d been looking for. Avoid overspending when testing products and ask for a sample size if you’re stylist makes a recommendation. And if a friend makes a suggestion based on their great experience, ask if you can “test” a bit of their product too! If you’re interested in making your own conditioning treatment, try pureeing the following ingredients and then applying the mixture with your fingers from root to end:

1 avocado

1/2 banana

1/2 can coconut milk

1/4 cup honey

1 egg or 1/4 cup mayonnaise

Bring on the Heat

You have several options to consider in this step. Whichever conditioner you use, after applying it, cover your head with a plastic shower cap and either:

  1. Sit under the dryer on low heat
  2. Warm a towel in the microwave and wrap it over the shower cap or
  3. Let the deep conditioning treatment stay in overnight.

If you go with option 1 or 2, be sure to let the conditioner stay in for at least 15 minutes or consult the directions on your product container for their recommended time. If you chose option 3, be sure to put a barrier between your head and your pillow

Oooh Rinse it!

Don’t undo all the great work you did by being rough with your hair in this step. Rinse your hair out gently. Also, be sure to leave a little conditioner in to keep your hair soft and manageable. It’s also a good idea to be extra nice to your hair in this state. Your hair will be very soft and may feel different than it usually does.
